Welcome to the second in a presumably long winded series about Disgaea 5. You are here because you’ve unlocked Squads and want to know what to do with them. I will warn you in advance that there are some (very) light spoilers in the squads below that detail a single post game character (who has no impact on the story in any fashion). If you don’t mind that, come on down! This’ll be image heavy. Hopefully it doesn’t murder my bandwith :p.
A quick guide here, for essential I tried to order a bit by importance. [That said, Life Support Unit takes so little to cap you might as well do it whenever to get it out of the way.]
Boot Camp Squad
Innocent Aid Squad
Life Support Unit
Essential-ish / Handy:
Skill Training Squad
Foot Soldier Squad
Cyber Special Squad
Item Adventure Squad
Research Support Unit
Giant Killer Squad
Asagi Fan Club
Defense Outpost Squad
Dark Assembly Squad
This is fun to use but there is no reason to ever cap the capture squad. You will, through regular play, get an item called the “Megaphone”. Equip it in the offhand of your main character (whatever you use the most) and they’ll capture people 30% of the time. You’ll have so many prisoners just from playing that you’ll never look back on this silly Squad. (But again, the animations are fun).
The interrogation squad is essential to rank 2. You want to be able to interrogate ALL your prisoners at once. You can interrogate 5 times per map cleared. Eventually you’ll want this capped and arguably it feeds into itself. I capped it early and it didn’t take too many guys to do it. (You can see how many people I put into it by the # of Squad Members stat in the image).
This one is interesting because technically level 7 is the best. When you start breeding innocents you’ll want them to not be subdued. This is because an innocent path item world item + the hunter bonus below will get you 8x innocents which makes capping extremely easy. I’m lazy though, so I capped this. Hasn’t bit me in the butt yet, but I haven’t tried to make the 19998 stat innocents yet…
The skill training squad is most useful for quickly and easily spreading skills among your units. You only need to use a skill enough to get it to level once, then it’ll be stuck on the new character. As mentioned in the caption it is very useful for spreading big bang.
Boot Camp is good. Boot Camp loves you. Cap your Boot Camp. Don’t look back.
Not as important as Boot camp, but shouldn’t be totally ignored.
Literally pointless. You will never need this. Just skip it and save your minions. Unless you, like me, had lots of extra 9999’s laying around and felt like capping it.
Same as before, no need to ever touch this.
Get this to cap or as high as you can, as early as you comfortably can. Alchemists will be churning out 100s of Gency’s Exits for your inevitable grind of character classes and item worlds.
Gave me a good laugh when I saw the icon, but useless.
Very bad at almost all times, don’t use it.
Also funny, but useless.
Essential. Get this capped as soon as you can. That deathblow + double innocent growth is essential. Slap your sage in here and you’ll be clearing entire maps of innocents in one move. [In a future guide I’ll explain this in more detail.]
Can be handy if you are on the precipice of being able to do something in the Land of Carnage, but otherwise meh.
Get it to rank 2. Appears to always work, even when nobody is in it. Kinda cool.
Silly and useless.
No need to ever touch this. A waste of your time. You’ll be leveling tens of thousands of times faster than this shortly.
Entirely unnecessary. In a few more guides you’ll be almost (or literally) one shotting the dark assembly for any bill.
Pretty handy! Tons of level spheres, and other special chars, and you can fly through unprotected levels with a moth in this squad.
I keep forgetting to put people in it. But at the very least the level 5 perk is handy. Not technically necessary but it won’t hurt you.
Woops, apparently I forgot to caption this one. Ah well, let’s just say I sent the caption on a Research Mission. Hasn’t hurt me. I quite like it. The Level 5 perk is very handy. You can get rank 40 items from the latter research netherworlds, not something to ignore. Also GREAT for early to mid game leveling of your alts. They were outleveling my main team regularly.
Do it. Get it to rank 4, period. At some point you’ll be in a bonus map in the item world and if you don’t have this you’ll kick yourself for it. ALWAYS have the mandatory one smuck in this squad.
I wouldn’t even look at this until you are grinding out the Land of Carnage. It is going to take a shit ton of 9999s (27 to be exact, apparently) to cap.
This will break you. Well ok, not really. This is essential for a future guide about making a 10 million stat sage. It requires millions of levels worth of minions (like 2.5 I think). Pretty tough to cap but once you do it’s very handy.
And this, I believe, is the last one. We’ve saved almost the best for last! I’ll write up a curry guide soon but even without it I highly recommend the Curry squad be capped and always manned. You’ll be churning out some really great perks with this thing. Like 100% crit and massive HP/SP regen per turn. Super sleek, super sexy, 10/10.
And that’s that! I’ve not seen any other Squads and I’m fairly certain I would have by now. Upcoming guides will include mid to late game power leveling. Then we’ll move into character capping. Then item world grinding (making it painless ish). And…well…whatever else comes to mind I suppose.
